Abstract documentation is best description of the works by Valentyn Odnoviun (born 1987, Ukraine). In the last years the photographer, now living in Vilniuns (Lithuania), has been investigating the oppressed individual within a totalitarian regime through various series. The series "Surveillance" was presented to the at the Berlin Edition of Museum of Now.
Odnoviun received numerous international awards and recognitions for his work. The artist creates multi-layered, thought provoking images images and sparks introspection without looking for the spectacle. He precariously carries out his art facing cruel moments of human history and situations of absolute oppression.
SURVEILLANCE
Surveillance is the most comprehensive series by Valentyn Odnoviun. Odnoviun visited former prisons of the Gestapo, the KGB, the UB and the Stasi in Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Estonia and Germany and created a series of photographs taken through spy holes of prison cells. Valentyn Odnoviun depicted depicted the smallest spaces imaginable - those of prison cells - but the spy hole images often resemble large scale celestial bodies, moons and planets, leaving the physical scale beyond.
